Shades wedding guests should skip

Leave white, cream, ivory and champagne in the closet, since any of them can look bridal or pull attention from the bride. If you know the bridesmaids' color, don't match it exactly. For a daytime ceremony, also pass on very sheer dresses or head-to-toe sequins.

What about red or all black? Most modern weddings are fine with both, and either one is a safe evening choice for a guest. Traditional, religious or cultural celebrations can be stricter about red or full black, so take your cues from the couple and the invitation.

Jewel tones for 2026 guest dresses

Deep gem-inspired colors suit a wide range of skin tones and look rich in photos, which is why so many guests are choosing them in 2026.

Wedding guest color questions

Which colors are off-limits for wedding guests?

Stay away from white, cream, ivory and champagne, because they can be mistaken for bridal wear. Try not to copy the bridesmaids' exact shade, and for daytime ceremonies pass on very sheer or fully sequined dresses.

Is it okay to wear black as a wedding guest?

Yes. Black is accepted at most modern weddings and works especially well for evening events. Some traditional or cultural celebrations favor brighter colors, so think about the setting before you decide.

Is it okay to wear red as a wedding guest?

At most Western weddings, yes, and a red dress makes a confident, polished statement. Keep in mind that red has a specific bridal meaning in some traditions, including many Chinese and South Asian weddings, so ask before you wear it.

What counts as a jewel tone?

Jewel tones are rich, deep colors named after gemstones, such as ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz and amethyst. They flatter most people, show up well in photos and are the leading guest-dress colors of 2026.

Which dress colors suit fall and winter weddings?

For fall, look at navy, mustard, rust, burgundy and emerald. Winter calls for darker picks like ruby, plum, sapphire, emerald and silver. Heavier fabrics such as velvet and satin work well in both seasons.
