Rather than guess at what people are wearing to events this year, we went through our whole range of 17,000+ women's occasion dresses and sorted each one by silhouette, color, fabric, neckline and price. Below is what that count shows about occasion dresses in 2026.
Silhouette: maxi first, mini a close second
Long and short styles are almost evenly matched. Full-length maxi dresses hold a slim lead in the count, and mini styles sit just behind them. Midi lengths and close-fitting bodycon cuts make up the rest of the four main shapes.
Color: black leads, with deep shades close behind
Black is far ahead of every other color and appears almost twice as often as white. Beyond black, richer jewel tones make a strong showing: red, blue and green all rank high, and shades like emerald and sage give guests more options than the usual pastels.
Fabric: lace on top, mesh not far behind
Among special fabrics, lace appears most often. Mesh takes second place by a clear margin, which reflects how common sheer panels and cutouts have become in going-out dresses. Sequin and satin come next, mostly in party and formal styles.
Neckline: V-neck by a wide margin
No neckline comes close to the V-neck, which suits most body shapes and works for almost any event. Spaghetti straps rank second, and strapless or tube tops follow, both common in summer and party styles.
Price: dressing for an event costs less than you might think
Price is where the numbers stand out most. In our price sample, the middle price for an occasion dress is $59, 68% are listed below $80, and 40% come in below $50. A dress for a party or wedding no longer has to be a big-ticket purchase.
What the 2026 numbers point to
- Deep colors alongside pastels: emerald, sapphire and ruby give wedding guests a richer, more saturated set of choices than soft pastels alone.
- Sheer panels and cutouts: with mesh in second place among fabrics, see-through and skin-showing going-out styles are now an everyday option.
- Shaping details: floral (2,335), ruched (1,938), split/slit (1,690) and backless (1,470) styles show how many dresses rely on details that define the shape.
- Event dresses at everyday prices: with a middle price under $60, buying a dress for an occasion can be a regular purchase instead of a once-a-year expense.
